Take Your Dog On Holiday

Taking your dog on holiday isn’t the stuff of nightmares any more. More and more airlines are making it easy for you to take your pets along when ever you fly out on vacation. If you have a small dog, all you need is a dog carrier to carry him along. Make sure you select one that’s perfect for his size. You don’t want a small carrier for a dog who’s of reasonable build. He has to be comfortable on the journey and when he isn’t he gets cranky, and you really don’t want that. Also make sure he has a small dog collar on him at all times even when he’s inside the carrier. Also leave the fancy rhinestone dog collars and the jeweled dog collar back home. A simple dog collar will suffice when you’re on a vacation.
Remember that not all airlines will allow your pet to fly with you. Normally only one pet is allowed per passenger. If you want to take him on board, the carrier has to fit under the seat in front of you, and cannot weight more than 20-22 pounds.
Make sure your dog has plenty of food and water for the duration of your flight. If he’s a snub nose dog, the airline might refuse to have him in the hold because of possible difficulty breathing.
Make sure your dog has received all his vaccinations and rabies shots before the flight.
If you’re planning on driving on holiday, you might not have a problem if your dog loves the experience. Some dogs aren’t that fond of cars however, which could be a problem.
If you dog has car anxiety, spend some time in the weeks leading up to the trip to familiarize him with the experience. Take it one step at a time. Initially try luring him inside the car with treats. The car has to be stationery, and the doors and windows have to be open. Once he’s comfortable enough to actually get into a stationery car, you can encourage him to spend more time in the car before you actually take him for a drive. This could be a time consuming process but it’s worth it if you want to enjoy your drive without your pet howling incessantly all the way!
